Why are they putting weed in my coffee?
Do you know your THC from your CBD?
– we didn’t but it’s time to get street smart.
With the UK government announcing only 4 days ago that patients can be prescribed medicinal cannabis by specialist doctors from 1 November 2018, and the high demand for innovative, effective natural ingredients its time for CBD to get trendy. Plus with our friends across the pond making waves with the legalisation of marijuana, this is the start of a long loving relationship.
CBD is the non psychoactive compound of cannabis (so you don’t get high, sadly) and has been referred to as a ‘miracle’ molecule that treats a huge range of conditions ranging from anxiety, epilepsy, arthritis to diabetes.
So what does CBD actually do?
It is used for pain, and can be used as an antioxidant, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, anxiety, muscle tension, depression it may be neuroprotective, be useful for acne, and be helpful for heart health. It seems there may be something helpful for most people from this molecule.
There are 113 different types of cannabinoid in CBD, and our bodies create a few naturally. We have an entire endocannabinoid system that was only discovered after scientists investigated the action of cannabis in the body. This system is involved in so many things including sleep, eating, thinking and even the way we age.
All this and we’re really only just beginning to understand this wonder plant and wonder system.
THC – The stuff that gets you high
THC is short for tetrahydrocannabinol is the psychoactive component of cannabis. Recently laws have changed in the UK so cannabis can be used medicinally. Both THC & CBD come from the cannabis plant, which is part of the hemp family and CBD helps cancel out the dangerous aspects of THC such as psychosis.
CBD is also found naturally in hemp, a plant which is related to cannabis. Hemp oil, hemp seeds, hemp powder, hemp tea are all available to buy. In fact hemp is one of the most versatile materials known and can make anything from clothes to paper.
Its not cheap and its not all good either
Whilst the potential of CBD is awesome, be wary about what you buy and where, as quality of the active compound can vary quite a bit across products, and like most wellbeing trends, it ain’t cheap either.
Lab reports showing the CBD content are a great sign, and it is best to buy organic if it is from a plant source (plant source is best)
Got it? Here is our list of how we use CBD, in what format and where to find some:
Creams have been created also, and are effective at relieving pain wherever they are applied. They are also great for soothing irritation and moisturising, as well as anti-aging.
Beauty fans will love luxury CBD beauty brand MGC , check out their Stem Cell night cream; great for reducing dark circles and puffiness. These hemp face masks by Opiat made on a Farm in Oxfordshire are great too.
Oils are useful also applied topically for pain, as well as antioxidant, and for treating anxiety. We love KiKi’s oil for when our skin is dry, or for if you have scaly skin conditions like eczema oils work great. Also using hemp oil works a treat, and you can use this hemp oil both topically and in your food for nutritional value.
Gummies and tablets
Fast and easy to administer, they are commonly used to help people get to sleep and these hemp oil infused gummies from Dr Fishmans Labs work a treat. They are also infused with melatonin, a hormone that we make to regulate our sleep cycles and help us get to sleep. But it’s also found naturally in fruits like cherries, so you won’t suffer any adverse effects.
Fantastic when dealing with pain, anxiety and as mood stabilisers. Lord Jones brand is great as they include the full spectrum of phytocannabinoids available from their organically grown hemp, whilst maintaining levels of terpenes found naturally in the plant. This is helpful as some companies isolate a single CBD, which isn’t as effective. This pain and wellness tincture enriched with omega-3 is one of our favourites.
CBD is in vapes and although without the THC you ain’t getting a real high it’s said to be a common way of treating inflammation, pain, and high blood pressure. We wouldn’t recommend vaping for health, but if you are into that then Vape UK CBD is a good place to start.
CBD products for pets seem to be hot property and these treats are a great way to boost your dog’s health and keep them happy. This is a natural way to help your pet if they have anxiety, seizures, epilepsy, boost appetite, relieving chronic pain and even cancer. If your friend is feline then we like Canna Pet for CBD based products. This dosing chart is also really helpful to get just the right amount for all shapes and sizes.
